Pool And Poker Compared

It shouldn't come as any surprise that most pool players will take up playing poker, and vice versa. Both pool and poker are synonymous with gambling and players of one game are typically introduced to the other. Professional poker player Daniel Negreanu was once a pool hustler and eventually made the switch to poker. Let's take a look at some similarities between the two.

Both Games Require Math

To be a good poker player or a good poker player, you need to be good at math. Of course, the type of math require does differ in poker as opposed to pool. Poker requires players to know pot odds, hand odds, implied odds, and the ability to make calculations on the spot. Pool on the other hand requires you to have a decent understanding of geometry and angles. Players need to understand how certain angles and how the application of spin on a ball will affect a shot.

Both Games Require Intense Focus

Whether you are playing on poker websites or playing live poker, you need to be focused at all times to be a consistent winner in poker. The same holds true to pool. If you lose focus of what is going on in the game, you can make an error on a shot or miss a shot or angle that may have helped you run the table. Poker players have to have focus for hours at a time in order to keep track of all the information being presented to them at the tables. Pool players need to be focused in order to make the right shot and to be able to think ahead to what position they want to put themselves in.

Position Is Important

Poker players on US real money poker sites know that position is very important in the game of poker. The better you position, the wider range of hands you can play. Also, the later position that you are in at the table, the more information you have. Position in pool is important too. You need to keep mindful of what position you are going to leave your ball in at the conclusion of an upcoming shot. In addition, you have to leave yourself a shot in order to continue the game. If that fails, you need to find a way to give your opponent the worst position possible so that they cannot get a shot off.

Both Games Require Practice to Excel

Pool players know that the more they play and work on their games, the better player that they will become. If they cannot make a certain bank shot, they will work on it until they can perfect it. Poker is much the same way. You can only improve by playing more poker and working on your game. Whether you play online using a poker deposit bonus as motivation or you play in live games to improve your reads, you have to work on your game to improve. Improving your game is a constant process. If you do not work on your game regularly in either game, you skills will deteriorate.

As you can see, there are a lot of similarities between pool and poker. That is probably why many pool players move on to or include poker in their games of choice. If you play pool or poker, and don't play the other, consider taking up the game. You may find you are ahead of the learning curve over many new players.
