Junior World Championship Underway
SYDNEY , Australia – Rene Mar David had a perfect meal and a perfect game yesterday.

The 17-year-old from Barangay Botocan in Quezon City blanked Coby Cranmere of the host country, 9-0, in the opening round of the World 9-Ball Junior Championship after a sumptuous lunch at the Lutong Pinoy Restaurant here.

“ At home na at home pa rin ako. Iba siyempre kapag pagkaing Pilipino ang nakain mo (I felt at home here. It felt different if you ate Filipino food ),” said David following his victory at the billiards hall of RSL Club in Rooty Hill.

He was accompanied by RSL food supervisor Rolando Balbin in the famous Filipino restaurant in the area, a five-minute drive from the venue. David, the first Filipino to compete in the event, raced to a quick 5-0 lead in the alternate break affair, highlighting his initial wave with the match’s only golden break on the fourth frame.

“Ang ganda ng tinitira ko sa simula pa lang kaya sa tingin ko pinaghinaan na rin ng loob ang nakalaban ko. (My shots were good from the start, that maybe the reason why my opponent self-destructed in the end,” related David.

He had little trouble on the fifth rack, trading safety shots with Cranmere and fouling up twice. But the local boy from Wagga Wagga , New South Wales failed to set up what could have been the final foul for David and left a wide open table for a 6-0 lead for the Filipino.

Cranmere also had a chance to score on the seventh rack after pocketing two balls on his break and taking a clear look at the one-ball. Unfortunately for the chubby 15-year-old, he missed a long shot on the orange five and practically gifted David a 7-0 advantage.

A one-nine combo on the next frame pushed David to the hill with plenty to spare. David, whose campaign is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines , Raya Sports, Kingston basketball club, Lutong Pinoy Restaurant, Grand Sports, MASCO head Ali Atienza and Bugsy’s Promotion, will next face Jonathan Pakieto of New Zealand .

Pakieto, a lanky 17-year-old, beat Shin Jin Hae of Korea , 9-2. He finished ninth in the competition two years ago.

In other matches, two-time defending champion Wu Yu Lun of Taiwan downed Blake Bartlett of Australia, 9-2, Arther Koshovoyy of Ukraine won by default over Mohammad Farshd of Iran, Diego Gomez of Venezuela beat Yusuke Shibata of Japan, 9-6, and Daniel Rakin, a Filipino-American from Daly City, California, trounced Ben Getaj of Australia, 9-4.

Hello,

More news from Juinors courtesy of Marlon Bernardino and Noli Cruz.
Thanks Guys!

Filipino David Beats German Ace To Advance In Quarters
SYDNEY, Australia – Rene Mar " Revo" David survived three scratches, two empty breaks and a robotic German foe to advance into the quarterfinals of the World Junior 9-Ball Championship.

The diminutive cue artist from Barangay Botocan, Quezon City rallied from several two-rack deficits before scoring a 9-8 victory over Thomas Luttich yesterday at the billiards hall of RSL Club in Rooty Hill here.

David leaned on his superiority in safety exchanges in the hill-hill endgame, which led to a critical foul by Luttich.

With the green six and black eight clustered on the rail near the side pocket, David pulled off a superb safety after pocketing the five-ball. He made a thin cut on the six to place it on the back of the eight with the cue ball rolling back and forth into the middle.

“P’wede ko sanang i-break ‘yung 6-8 cluster sa malapit sa side kaya lang baka magmintis ang tira ko sa singko (I could have broken the 6-8 clustered after but i might miss my shot on the No.5 ball,” David said.

It proved to be a wise move as Luttich messed up and left an open table for David.

“Sabi ko sa sarili ko kapag nabigyan ako ng pagkakataong bumalik sa mesa sa last rack hindi ko sasayangin ( I told my self, if i would given a chance to return on the table, i will not wasted,” said David.

He got the chance when Luttich undercooked his preparation on the two-ball, leaving the cue ball behind the brown seven to the delight of the Filipino supporters, mostly RSL employees and players of the Kingston basketball club.

“Mahirap talaga kapag naunahan kapag alternate break (It's really hard if your opponent takes an early lead in alternate break format,” said David, whose campaign is supported by Raya Sports and the Philippine Sports Commission.

David, who never trailed in his first two matches, endured a shaky start this time.

Luttich opened his account with a golden break and cleaned up the next frame after David’s first scratch.

The Filipino shunned away from his power break on his next three breaks and knotted the count at 4-all.

“Nakita ko kasi na one-ball ang pag set-up kaya laging may pumapasok kada sargo kahit mahina lang,” David related.

Things took a different turn on his fifth break as he scratched for the second time, paving the way for 6-4 Luttich lead.

David had his third scratch on the 14th frame and Luttich took advantage for an 8-6 advantage. It was an extremely sad day for Team Europe with all four of its players falling by the wayside opposite Asian players.

Yevgen Novosad of Ukraine squandered a four-rack lead in an 8-9 loss to two-time defending champion Wu Yun-Lun of Taiwan; Bartolome Czapla of Poland bowed to Huang Tsung-Yu of Taiwan, 5-9; and Adam Skoneczny of Poland fell to Ko Pin-Yi of Taiwan 1-9.

David, who also got support from Grand Sport, MASCO head Ali Atienza, Bugsy’s Promotion, Lutong Pinoy Restaurant and Kingston Basketball Club, and the three Taiwanese players will play the four survivors from the loser’s bracket in the quarterfinals today.

The knockout format will be implemented from the quarterfinals.

Hello,

Even more news from our friend Marlon Bernardino.

Thanks Marlon!

RP Will Have At Least Two Slots In World 9-Ball Junior

SYDNEY, Australia – The Philippines will have at least two slots for the World 9-Ball Junior Championship next year according to Asian Pocket Billiards Union (APBU) secretary Robert Huang. “Filipinos are very good pool players. It’s really puzzling why the Philippines only sent a representative in the competition this year,” he said.

The impressive fifth place finish of Rene Mar "Revo" David in the five-day event gave the Philippines an extra slot for its next edition.

“Rene Mar is still eligible to play for the next two years. He will surely have a high seeding if ever he will play again here,” Huang said. David won his first three matches before falling to Gerald Lopez of Nicaragua, 7-9, in the quarterfinals Thursday.

The 17-year-old from Barangay Botocan, Quezon City was satisfied with his overall performance.

“Kahit na hindi ako sinuwerteng manalo ng championship alam ko naman na ginawa ko ang best ko para manalo (Although I failed to win the championship I know I did my best),” said David, whose campaign is supported by Raya Sports and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Born in Apalit, Pampanga was raised in Candon City, Ilocos Sur, David whose stint here also supported by Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP), Grand Sport, Rhadiola, ACCEL, MASCO head Ali Atienza, Bugsy’s Promotion, BM Express, Lutong Pinoy and Le Colonial Vietnamese Restaurant and Kingston Basketball Club.

Two-time defending champion Wu Yu-Lun of Taiwan and compatriot Ko Pin-Yi were set to dispute the title late last night.

Wu beat Lopez, 9-7, while Ko downed Adam Skoneczny of Poland, 9-7, in the semifinals.

In the distaff side, Filipina-American Mary Rakin crushed Taiwanese Wu Hsiao-Wen, 7-4, to book a seat in the finals at the billiards hall of RSL Club in Rooty Hill here.

She will face the winner of the match between Anna Kostanian of the United States and Bi Zu-Qing of China in the title match.

The Daly City, California resident Rakin, who traced her roots from Cavite, earlier defeated Cha You-Ram of Korea, 7-5, Denise Wilkinson of New Zealand, 7-2, and Marina Linguerri of Canada, 7-2
